PlayStation VR 2: pre-orders would be disappointing, Sony forced to revise its objectives downwards

It’s an open secret, for some years now (and especially since the advent of the PS5), Sony has been trying to make PlayStation a Premium brand, close to what the iPhone represents in terms of public attachment claimed by Apple. PS5 price increases over PS4, a €50 increase in its console since last September, first party games for €80, a pro controller for €240 and finally a PSVR 2 headset launched for €599, Sony Interactive Entertainment has clearly changed its philosophy compared to the previous generation. A bet that it wouldn’t pay off that much, at least not for its next virtual reality headset, scheduled for February 22, 2023 worldwide. According to the latest Bloomberg survey, the Japanese manufacturer has drastically lowered its ambitions for PlayStation VR 2, following poor pre-order data.

Recall that Sony aimed to sell 2 million PSVR 2 by the end of March 2023, one month after its launch. Objectives that have undoubtedly been established following the dizzying sales of PS5, despite the shortage of components and despite a constantly rising price. However, it is fashionable to remember that the first PS VR took 8 months to cross the million copies mark in 2016/2017. According to the Bloomberg article, for Sony Interactive Entertainment, the general public would now be more inclined to be seduced by virtual reality. No doubt the virtual reality market has become more democratic over the past six years, but given the current economic situation, the general public may not be ready to invest so much money in it just yet. In any case, reality has caught up with ambitions…
