End of applause for the historical networks of the SFR group. 2G and 3G will no longer exist within five years for the operator’s customers who will have to go through the much more efficient 4G and 5G networks. To roll out 5G throughout France, the operator called on the telecommunications company Nokia.
End of 2G in 2026, 3G will be disconnected in 2028
In March 2022, Orange was the first operator to announce that it would shut down its 2G mobile network in 2025 and its 3G network in 2028. Patrick Drahi’s group announced its plan to disconnect its 2G/3G networks in the coming years. For the operator, the closure of its historic networks demonstrates that it is entering a new era. 2G has been available in France for over thirty years, being deployed in 1991. 3G, being deployed in the early 2000s, is over twenty years old.

SFR will officially close its second generation network in 2026, while the third generation will be disconnected in 2028. The low frequency currently used for 2G and 3G will be allocated to its fourth and fifth generation networks, which will facilitate its deployment and coverage network across the country. For the moment, 4G is available in 99% of the territory, but this is not yet the case for 5G.
SFR and Nokia join forces to develop 5G
To cover the whole territory with 5G, SFR turned to Finnish equipment supplier Nokia. Thanks to the know-how of the telecommunications specialist, the French operator will roll out its cloud-native 5G core network this year. The partnership between the two companies does not stop there as Nokia and SFR will work hand in hand to develop and deploy 5G private mobile networks thanks to the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud solution.
This new offer is particularly aimed at companies that want to benefit from a network independent of the public mobile network. The Finnish company had already collaborated with Iliad, parent company of the Free operator, with the aim of equipping the industrial site of Alcatel Submarine Networks in Calais with its own 5G network.
SFR focuses as much as possible on the implementation of fifth generation networks, which consume less energy than previous generations. Like its competitor Orange, it wants to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.
