Korean manufacturer Samsung, a member of the Connectivity Standard Alliance, announces support for Matter for its app on Android and iOS.

The planets are slowly aligning for Matter, the home automation protocol officially launched on October 4th in version 1.0. After Amazon, which launched the update bringing Matter support to 17 products of the Echo range (but in a version limited to Wi-Fi and a configuration available only on Android, the iOS version of the Alexa App is scheduled for next spring) or Google (always for Nest and Android devices), today it’s up to Samsung to offer an update to its SmartThings app that supports Matter on iOS and Android. Matter-enabled devices (you have yet to find one) connected to a SmartThings hub can then be set up and controlled from both platforms.

The transition to Materia is not as smooth as expected

If Eve proposes today to try Matter in early access (the first compatible models right out of the box will be marketed in March 2023) and iOS is ready from iOS 16.1 (but the new architecture of the Home App has been retired following a chaotic transition and should return with iOS 16.4), other manufacturers have preferred to postpone the implementation of protocol support. This is the case of Aqara, which after announcing the arrival of the appropriate update for the end of last year on its M2 hub, is now planning a launch in the next weeks. Other players in the home automation market, such as Nuki or Nanoleaf, have announced the arrival of products and updates for 2023, without specifying dates. So it still seems a bit early to embark on the Matter adventure, e home automation enthusiasts eager to test the new protocol will have to wait a few more months before, perhaps, savoring the pleasures of interoperability, one of the promises of the Matter.
